The YIEld icon reminds us that when consonants C or G are followed by vowels Y, I, or E, the consonants will often make their soft sounds.

Consonant C will yield to /s/, as in cider.

Consonant G can yield to /j/, as in giraffe.

When doing markup with YIEld, write an upside down triangle over the consonant making the soft sound.
