-ve

English words usually do not end with V. Typically, the final V is followed by working E which is silent and working to keep V from being at the end. Sometimes, working E is doing two jobs: It keeps V from being at the end and makes the vowel before the V say its long sound, as in “save”.

Many words that end with the /v/ sound come from Old English, Dutch, German, or French words. These words once ended with a syllable that had a /f/, /fə/ or /və/ sound. As words became spoken more rapidly and shortened, those sounds became the /v/ sound.
