When the sound /k/ is at the beginning of a word, it can be spelled different ways.
We can’t always use consonant C, because when vowels Y, I, or E come right after, C will make its soft sound instead.
For now, we use the cat kit spelling function to decide.
For beginning /k/, use consonant C, unless it is followed by vowels Y, I, or E.
If beginning /k/ is followed by vowel Y, I, or E, use consonant K.
Beginning /k/, in Greek words can also be spelled using digraph CH as in chemistry.
This will be explored in a later lesson.
