There are several ways to spell /k/ in the middle of the word.
If /k/ is not followed by vowels E, I, or Y, try consonant C. Consonant C will then make its hard sound /k/, as in “pelican”.
If middle /k/ is followed by Y, I, or E, check to see if there is a short vowel sound before. If so, use digraph C K, as in “chicken”.
If you can’t use consonant C or digraph CK for middle /k/, try letter K, as in “token”.
When using digraph CK after middle /k/, divide after CK so it remains attached to the short vowel sound before.
If a word has a glued sound, such as INK, as in “trinket”, or ANK as in “swanky”, try dividing after the glued sound.
