C+le

When a word ends with an unaccented C+LE it says /əL/.
The E at the end is unvoiced but is needed because a syllable must have a vowel.

When using markup for ending consonant-L-E, there are two options. Underline the entire final C+LE syllable and mark it with a schwa; or place a schwa over the syllable, a dot under consonant L, and a forward slash through the silent E.

There are going to be occasions with C+LEwhere it may not make sense to keep the consonant with the LE in the last syllable. For example, it may need to stay in the first syllable because the first syllable makes a short, closed sound, as in “treble”. Or, it is part of digraph CK, as in “trickle”. Or, it may be a part of a vowel team, as in “ankle”.
