When a multisyllable word ends with a vowel followed by consonant L, it is typically pronounced /əL/.
We call this pattern the Ending V+L.
Here are the common Vowel+L spellings:
AL says /əL/ as in “oval”
EL says /əL/ as in “camel”
IL says /əL/as in “pencil”
OL says /əL/ as in “symbol”
UL says /əL/ as in “mogul”
YL says /əL/ as in “vinyl”
In each case, the vowel is unaccented and turns to schwa.
The most frequent ending V+L spellings are AL and EL. IL and OL are less frequent, and UL and YL are rare.
For the probability order for the ending vowel L spellings, simply write V+L to represent all the vowel+L endings, instead of writing each combination separately.
